Eru gögnin þín rétt?

Data are considered deadly boring so we tried to be clever with the title of this piece. It’s Icelandic for “Are your data accurate?” We hope our choice of language makes the subject sound cool.

Insurers love data with a passion. Some of the stuff is accurate, most is open to varying degrees of interpretation. However, per Clifford Stoll, “Data is not information, information is not knowledge, knowledge is not understanding, understanding is not wisdom.” In…

CDRG fly’s by the seven year itch mark and turns 8.

What a difference 8 years makes!

It seems like just yesterday we we’re losing ground to the franchises that had the financial backing of headquarters to promote and sell their franchisees.  If you couldn’t get in to see the decision makers in Toronto it was getting harder and harder to sustain our individual market share, some might even go as far as saying impossible in certain parts of the country.

We we’re consumed with anger, a powerful emotion that fuelled our…

Back from Down Under

Just spent six weeks in Queensland Australia working the aftermath of Cyclone Yasi. Great country with wonderful people. I'm now looking for a new opportunity to keep me busy between now and the start of hurricane season. If you could use the services of a 37 year veteran of the claims industry who is fluently bilingual and proficient in all lines P&C except for auto then drop me a line or call 613-288-8754

FSCO Guideline Calls on Insurers to Challenge Questionable or Abusive Claims

On March 22, 2011, FSCO quietly released P&C Bulletin No. A-02/11, called "Insurer Rights and Responsibilities to Challenge Questionable or Abusive Claims". The Guideline states that FSCO is trying to identify and respond to actions that are inconsistent with the recent auto reforms of September 1, 2010. Apparently FSCO is also "aware that a small group of service providers and representatives continue to abuse the system."

Some of the issues include treatment providers…

Div. Court Restores Confidence in Litigation Privilege

At a tort discovery, the plaintiff sought particulars of information contained in a signed statement the defendant gave to his insurer. The defendant refused on the basis of litigation privilege. On appeal, the motion judge referred to various cases as authority for the principle that questions on discovery seeking the facts of a party’s case do…
