Shelley Yoo Please help the Einbodens!

At 2:45 pm March 7th, 2010, a tragedy those of us in the insurance industry are only to familiar with, fire, struck, yet again with the death of a 12-year old Toronto girl, Britney Einboden, and her father,
Ken Einboden aged 44.

Ken died after rushing back into the burning home, having just safely rescued his five-month-old daughter, in an attempt to save Britney.

Unfortunately, Ken apparently was

Loic Jeanjean Top 12 items to consider before launching your financial website

An effective website can have a significant impact on your marketing initiatives and your practice. Few will argue that you absolutely need one in this day and age. Most consumers these days will do one type of on-line research or another before buying a product or a service. Have you ever gone online to research and compare a Television, Car, Golf Course etc… before actually making the purchase? Consumers will go through a similar process when choosing a financial services pro

James McDonall The Big Switch

I spent many years (1987-2006) working for one insurance company's claims office, but then decided it was time for a change. So if you're going to make a change - why not make it a big one? Make no mistakes, the switch from company to IA is indeed a big one. I'm still - forgive the pun - "adjusting" to it, and any input on the transition is welcome.

I'm game for almost anything, but there are some things you just can't know about switching, until you actually do it. Some of it'

Kabir Shaal Preferred Supplier Programs

This article was published in C&R Magazine in August 2009 Everybody wants to pay less for goods and services but nobody wants a corresponding reduction in value. Imagine what would happen if negotiating a series of price reductions on a vehicle with a car dealer meant progressively losing the wheels, windshield, fenders, seats, heating system, and so on. Few buyers would negotiate because they would immediately see an erosion of tangible value...… Continue

Kabir Shaal New Trends in the Restoration Industry

This blog was originally published on my website in December 2009. Although written for the restoration industry, it contains information that insurers may find useful. Comments welcome. It’s that time of the year again: the twilight days between one year and the next; the easy commute to work while others are on holiday; the perfunctory shuffle of papers from desktop to filing cabinet or dustbin in preparation for a… Continue

Robin Wilks CGL Exclusion of Bodily Injury and Property Damage caused by the loading or unloading of motor vehicles including the use of attached machinery

Can anyone shed some light on a situation with respect to a potential gap of coverage for contractors in BC, for instance a concrete pumping contractor or specialty vehicles with the use of cranes. There is no coverage under the ICBC Automobile policy and the liability policy excludes coverage for example if during pumping at a job site the boom breaks free & damages a building or injures a passerby. If anyone can shed some light on this situation, I would be greatful! Thank you. Continue

Heather Roberts H1N1 and the workplace

As the commercial goes, do I stay or do I go? If a co-worker's spouse has been diagnosed with H1N1 and the co-worker does not show symptoms what happens next? An employer is in a difficult situation telling an employee to stay away from work if that employee is not sick. The co-workers are not going to want to take the chance of infection. So does one stay home or take the risk of many booking a "personal" or "sick" day to avoid contact? Most people who are of working age are not in the high-r… Continue

Heather Roberts How we can help with the H1N1 concerns

Travel insurance - what a great idea! Disability insurance with a zero waiting period would also be something to consider but my understanding is that the cost is often prohibitive. Check out my article http://turnerstips.wikidot.com/insurance-answer-for-h1n1 and thanks to Canadian Underwriter for drawing this to our attention. Selling peace of mind is what we are all about! Rick Restell If you can't run with the big dogs - you better stay on the porch!

I have had several conversations recently about the speculation that Direct Writers and Large Consolidating Brokers are going to make it difficult, if not impossible for a small Broker to prosper. Is it time for me to sell? That's the question, and it's a good one. When exactly is the right time. I think it's human nature to try to avoid change and what goes along with that is the belief that things are not changing around us. If we were all good at that, who would have been caught by the econo… Continue

Heather Roberts Banks will no longer sell online

When I heard the news that soon the banks will no longer be offering online insurance products I did feel some relief. It bothered me to walk into the local Royal Bank and see the signs advertising insurance. The tellers were directing people to check out the online information. I do agree with the Minister Flaherty's decision that this is unacceptable. It is my belief that a good broker or agent will prove to be the best long-term partner for an insured. What do most of the clients think? if… Continue

Ryan Guthrie Telecommunications theft - misappropriation

Wondering if anyone has come across a loss situation where a company has sustained considerable long-distance charges caused by an unknown third-party using their phone system. Any insurance mechanism for handling? I don't see cover under any crime or property forms. Telephone lines misappropriated could result in thousands of dollars of long-distance charges which the telephone company will certainly expect payment of, unless relationship supports them waiving. This could be caused by an unknow… Continue
